“An abandoned motorbike.” The words conjure images of neglect, of forgotten journeys. But sometimes, they tell a darker tale. This Abandoned Motorbike in Singapore may be more than just a forgotten vehicle. It might be a silent witness to a tragedy.

Imagine a late night on the Pan Island Expressway. The hum of traffic fades. A motorcyclist speeds along towards Changi. Suddenly, something goes terribly wrong.

Perhaps a sudden swerve. A loss of control. The next thing anyone knows, the motorcycle lies discarded in the middle of the highway. The rider is nowhere to be seen.

This scenario isn’t just a figment of imagination. On Nov 29, a TikTok user shared a video of an Abandoned Motorbike on the PIE. The caption spoke of “no rider around”.

The OP, Hidayat Nordin, and his friend spotted the Abandoned Motorbike at 2.30 am. They were after the exit at Bedok North. They were heading towards Changi. Other motorists were already there, trying to move the vehicle.

Hidayat, his friend, and another motorist directed traffic. They searched for the missing rider. Another driver and passenger stopped to help. Even an off-duty traffic police officer assisted.

After about 30 minutes, police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force arrived. The search ended tragically. The rider’s body was found along the road divider. A paramedic pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the scene.

The SCDF confirmed the road traffic incident. It occurred along the PIE towards Changi before the Tampines Avenue 5 exit. One person was pronounced dead.

Abandoned vehicles are a serious issue. They pose safety hazards. Singapore law addresses this issue. The Superintendent can remove abandoned vehicles. They can also immobilize illegally parked ones. This is according to the Removal and detention, etc., of abandoned or illegally parked vehicles act.

If a vehicle appears abandoned, the Superintendent can remove it to a place of safety. They can also prevent its removal by fixing an immobilisation device. The owner receives a notice about securing the vehicle’s release.

The vehicle is only released after all expenses and charges are paid. If unclaimed within a month, the Superintendent can sell or dispose of it. The proceeds cover expenses and charges. The surplus goes to the owner. Unclaimed surplus is forfeited to the Authority.

The Authority is not liable for vehicle damage or loss. That is unless it was caused willfully or negligently.

So, the next time you see an Abandoned Motorbike, remember this story. It is a reminder of the fragility of life. It also highlights the regulations in place to manage such situations. It’s a stark reminder to drive and ride safely. It underscores the importance of responsibility on Singapore’s roads.
