Locked away in the heart of Shanghai, Tilanqiao Prison holds over a century of stories within its imposing walls. Did the name “Tilanqiao” ever strike you as unusual? It translates to “basket bridge,” a nod to the bridge once leading to the Xiahai Temple, where devotees carried baskets overflowing with offerings. Although the bridge vanished around 1900, the name stuck, eventually becoming synonymous with the notorious prison built on Changyang Road. This is Tilanqiao Prison, a place where history and hardship intertwine. Constructed in 1901 by the British and opened in 1903, Tilanqiao Prison was originally called Ward Road Gaol. It served the Shanghai International Settlement, holding those condemned by its consular courts. At its peak, over 8,000 inmates resided within its 4-hectare expanse, a complex of ten multi-story buildings containing approximately 4,000 cells, along with canteens, clinics, and administrative offices. Tilanqiao Prison’s walls have witnessed China’s turbulent journey through the 20th century. Within these cells, prominent revolutionaries like Zhang Taiyan, Zou Rong, and Ren Bishi plotted against the Qing Dynasty. Following World War II, hundreds of Japanese POWs found themselves confined here. In 1995, the prison officially became known as Shanghai Tilanqiao Prison. In 1994, the city recognized its historical significance, declaring the buildings protected structures. This recognition was elevated in 2013 when it was designated a national-level relic. Today, one of the buildings serves as a museum, offering a glimpse into the prison’s complex past to those who book in advance. Tilanqiao Prison was not just a prison; it was a landmark, a constant reminder of law and order, and sometimes, injustice. Its imposing presence cast a long shadow over the surrounding area, hindering commercial development. But times change. The prison has been relocated, and the area is poised for transformation. The old walls, once symbols of confinement, now stand as testaments to a bygone era. What will become of Tilanqiao Prison? Perhaps a museum, a legal education center, or even a themed hotel. The possibilities are as vast as the stories it holds.
