Time jumps back six centuries. Imagine the weary travelers seeking solace at this very spot before us: the Wegekapelle in Klein Grönau. This small chapel stands as a testament to faith and history. It has been a beacon of hope for over 600 years.

The Wegekapelle’s story began in 1409. It was built as a place of prayer. It served the residents of the Siechenhaus. The Siechenhaus was a leper colony across the street. The chapel provided spiritual comfort to those afflicted with leprosy. They were isolated from the city of Lübeck.

In 1423, the area became part of Lübeck. This made it a small enclave within Lauenburg. Over time, the Wegekapelle continued to serve its community. Even after leprosy was no longer a threat, the chapel remained a vital part of the community.

Look closely. Notice the chapel’s simple rectangular design. It measures just 6.30 meters wide and 9.10 meters long. The roof is topped with a small tower called a Dachreiter. It was added during a renovation in 1659. The floor you are standing on was renewed in 1841.

The Wegekapelle has two sister chapels. One stood near Dassow. Sadly it was demolished in 1973. Another still stands in Weitendorf near Wismar.

Inside the Wegekapelle, you would have discovered many historical treasures. There was a limestone holy water basin. It survived the Reformation. A carved predella from the 15th century. Also a baroque crucifixion group from around 1700. It originally came from the Heiligen-Geist-Hospital. Most of these items are now in the St. Annen Museum since 1912.

For a time, the Wegekapelle fell into disuse. But in 1963, it was rededicated. It became a place of worship again. Since 1981, the Wegekapelle has hosted Plattdüütsch Andachten. These are services in Low German. They take place on Sundays between Pentecost and Harvest Thanksgiving.

These services keep the Low German language alive. Locals like Hannelore Verwiebe lead these services. She rediscovered her love for Plattdeutsch later in life. She prepares sermons incorporating personal stories. She connects biblical themes to daily life.

Andreas Roxin is the Küster. He cares for the Wegekapelle. He ensures that the chapel remains active. He wants the walls to live. He ensures it does not become just a monument.

The Wegekapelle in Klein Grönau stands as a symbol. It represents faith, community, and the preservation of language. It is a reminder of the past. It also shows the enduring power of hope and tradition. This small chapel continues to welcome all. It offers solace and spiritual nourishment.
