What if I told you this green space was once divided by a road? That’s Beckton District Park for you. It is a testament to Newham Council’s ambitious vision. Welcome to Beckton District Park. This park isn’t just a green space. It’s a revitalized area designed for everyone.

The park actually consists of two halves. They are cleverly named Beckton District Park North and Beckton District Park South. Tollgate Road once separated them. Now, a footpath connects them. It’s part of the Capital Ring, a long-distance walking route.

Let’s start with the North. Beckton District Park North is accessible from Newham Way and Sheerwater Road. A fishing lake sits here. It invites you to pause and enjoy nature.

Now, let’s cross over to the South. Beckton District Park South has a different feel. The southeastern part has a large grassy area with football pitches. A children’s playground offers fun. A small pond adds to the charm. The northwestern area is managed for nature conservation. It features a wildflower meadow and woods. Access is from Stansfeld Road, Harper Road, and Tollgate Road. You can also reach it from Strait Road. Also from the walkway from Beckton DLR station.

Did you know there’s a smaller park nearby? It’s called New Beckton Park. It has sports pitches, a running track and outdoor exercise equipment. Savage Gardens provides access.

Newham Council approved the Beckton Parks Masterplan in January 2024. This plan is transforming the park. The Masterplan covers a large area. It includes Beckton District Park North and South. Also included are New Beckton Park, Beckton Corridor, and King George V Park.

The Masterplan addresses under-utilised areas. It seeks to rejuvenate amenities. The goal is to create a major asset for the borough. The park should be used by all residents and visitors.

The plans include a new Community Farm with Green Skills Hub. The former Newham City Farm site will be redesigned. There will be improvements to the lake in the North. The ecology will be reset to support new wildlife. The existing buildings will be redeveloped. The Boathouse Café will offer a café, toilets and indoor play space.

The Will Thorne Pavilion will be refurbished. It will offer improved facilities. These include community halls, accessible toilets and a café. The building will be a central hub. It will attract walkers, cyclists, dog walkers and families. New pathways will improve accessibility. Planting schemes will enhance biodiversity.

Safety is a priority. Key routes will be illuminated. CCTV will be installed. Traffic calming measures will be introduced along Stansted Road. Improved pedestrian crossings are planned.

Beckton District Park is open from dawn until dusk. It’s a place for recreation, nature and community. It offers something for everyone. Take a walk, play a game or simply relax. Enjoy the transformation of this urban green space.
