Standing before the Rectoría de la Divina Providencia, can you feel the echoes of a city caught in a whirlwind of change? It was the 1960s. Mexico City was expanding rapidly. The small Catholic chapel in the Del Valle colonia was bursting at the seams. Local residents decided to finance a larger church.

Architects Amaury Pérez de la Huerta García and Honorato Carrasco designed the Rectoría de la Divina Providencia. Construction began in 1968. It was completed in 1974. The city was buzzing with Modernist fervor during the Mexico City Summer Olympics. This architectural current influenced many buildings designed at the time.

The Rectoría de la Divina Providencia’s design resembles an open hand fan. It is semicircular. Twelve triangular panels define it. These panels represent the twelve apostles of Christianity. Each panel features stained glass windows. They display geometric motifs in warm colors. This is unlike the multicolored, figurative windows of many other churches. Its minimalistic interior is a departure from traditional Catholic architecture. This is especially striking in Baroque-heavy Mexico.

The altar sits in the semicircle’s center. A textured golden curved wall stands below a circular skylight. This skylight makes the altar shine most of the day. A cross hangs in front of the wall. Triangular structures with a wooden texture frame the wall. This creates a sober interior. The stadium-like seating surrounds the altar. This design was influenced by the Vatican Council. It sought to create a closer physical connection between altar and congregation.

Consider that the temple was financed entirely by parishioners. It went up in a semicircular design in 1968. Steep folds bear the vault’s weight. Many believed it was one of the most avant-garde examples of religious architecture. The distribution of space is remarkable. Especially the lighting achieved over the altar is a true work of art. An oculus illuminates the altar. It allows for the graceful entrance of natural light.

The twelve steep peaks are enclosed by stained glass windows. They depict the twelve apostles. The half-circle joins a more conventional building to the north. This building houses residential areas, classrooms, offices, and a dispensary.

The Rectoría de la Divina Providencia is part of its time. The church stands as a testament to architectural innovation. It reflects a community’s faith. It embodies the spirit of a city embracing modernity.
