Picture this a grand old mansion standing proudly yet modestly in Antalya. This is the Ataturk House and Museum a place steeped in history and brimming with stories. It wasn’t always a museum.

The Ataturk House and Museum holds a special place in Antalya’s heart. It started life as the governor’s mansion. Then it became Ataturk’s temporary home during his visits to Antalya. After Ataturk’s death it served as an art school and later as offices for the Ministry of Agriculture. Finally in 1984 it was given to the Ministry of Culture to become a museum.

But there’s a fascinating twist. The original building stood right in the middle of the street. During the city’s renovation the house had to be demolished. A replica was carefully rebuilt slightly further back from the road. The current museum is an exact reconstruction preserving its original charm and layout.

Step inside and you’ll find a treasure trove of artifacts. On the ground floor you can see newspaper clippings and photographs documenting Ataturk’s visits. A barcovision room shows a documentary about his time in Antalya. You can also explore the office and dining room just as they were during Ataturk’s stay.

Upstairs the museum offers a more intimate glimpse into Ataturk’s life. His bedroom and study are preserved. A special section displays a collection of Turkish coins paper money stamps and commemorative coins. Each item tells a story of the Republic’s birth and growth. A truly moving exhibit is the Museum Room. Here you find personal belongings of Ataturk brought from Anitkabir.

Ataturk visited Antalya three times. His first visit lasted a whole week from March 6 to 12 1930. During that week he explored the ancient sites met citrus farmers and even gave a speech from the mansion’s balcony. He famously declared Antalya the most beautiful place in the world after visiting the scenic Lara region. He even made recommendations for Aspendos Antique Theatre’s repair and opening to the public.

The Ataturk House and Museum isn’t just a collection of objects. It’s a living testament to a pivotal figure in Turkish history. It’s a tribute to Ataturk’s legacy and his connection to Antalya. It stands as a symbol of Antalya’s pride and respect for its most illustrious visitor. As you leave the museum you’ll carry with you a deeper understanding of this man and his profound impact on Turkey. It truly is a must see in the heart of Antalya.
