Did you know that the Evangelical Covenant Church has its roots in 19th-century Sweden? It all started with Swedish immigrants seeking a more personal faith. Standing here, in front of Covenant Evangelical Mission Church, we’re connected to a story that stretches back to those early Mission Friends.
The Evangelical Covenant Church was officially founded in Chicago on February 20 1885. These Swedish immigrants valued a vital faith. They emphasized personal faith in Christ and Scripture. They gathered to read the Bible sing songs and encourage one another.
These Mission Friends were influenced by Pietism. Pietism focused on a loving God a conversion experience and the importance of Scripture. Moravianism also played a role. It emphasized Christ-centered spirituality and a joyful faith journey.
The Covenant Evangelical Mission Church’s story is one of immigration renewal and a deep connection to faith. The early Covenanters understood the Christian life as a lifelong journey a pilgrimage. This journey began with baptism and continued through conversion and growth.
They asked each other “How goes your walk?” This encouraged sharing challenges blessings joys and sorrows within the community. Songs schools and this question itself were ways of supporting one another.
The Covenant established North Park University in Chicago. It also founded Minnehaha Academy. These institutions deepened the experience of Christian life.
Mission has always been central to the Evangelical Covenant Church’s identity. Early home missions included ministries to immigrants and sailors. Benevolent work led to retirement communities and homes for children.
World missions began in Alaska and China. They eventually expanded across the globe. These missions included medicine education agriculture and technology.

Oakdale Covenant Church in Chicago was the first with a majority African American congregation. Latino and Asian American churches also emerged. These diverse congregations contribute to the Covenant’s strength.
