Did the walls of Palácio dos Távora whisper secrets of power and tragedy? They certainly witnessed both. This grand palace, also known as Palácio das Galveias, stands as a testament to a turbulent chapter in Lisbon’s history. The Palácio dos Távora began as a 17th-century country estate for the powerful Marquis of Távora. Imagine their carriages rolling up the drive, the air filled with laughter and the scent of orange blossoms from the gardens. But this idyllic scene wouldn’t last. In 1759, the Távora family, once among Portugal’s most influential, fell from grace. Accused of plotting against King José I, they were executed, their titles and properties seized. The Palácio dos Távora, their beloved country retreat, became a symbol of their downfall. Later, in 1801, the palace gained a new name and a new owner. João de Almeida de Melo e Castro, the 5th Count of Galveias, purchased the estate. The name Palácio das Galveias stuck. However, despite its noble origins, the palace eventually fell into disrepair, becoming a shelter for the less fortunate. By 1927, it was practically a ruin. Recognizing its historical significance, the Lisbon Municipal Chamber stepped in. The palace was expropriated in 1928. It underwent extensive renovations. It was transformed into one of Lisbon’s earliest municipal libraries. The next time you’re near Campo Pequeno, take a moment to appreciate the Palácio dos Távora. Its walls hold echoes of both grandeur and tragedy. They offer a glimpse into the lives of the powerful Távora family and the ever-shifting landscape of Lisbon’s history.
