Imagine, if you will, a place where students transform into actors. This is die bühne, the theater of TU Dresden. It is more than just a stage. It’s a vibrant hub for creativity.
Die bühne has been around for over sixty years. It is one of Germany’s oldest and largest student theaters. Traditionally, die bühne focuses on professional theater work with students. These students come from all faculties.
What makes die bühne so special? It is the varied repertoire. Drama, performance, readings, and concerts are all found here. Die bühne embraces experimentation. Members are encouraged to explore their artistic desires.
Die bühne operates as a learning-by-doing theater. It’s a workshop where students gain hands-on experience. Here, they apply their knowledge practically. They gain topical and personal experience. This extends beyond the borders of their faculty.
Looking to get involved? There are many opportunities. Students can participate in drama or media courses. Improvisational theater is also an option. You can work on the lighting or sound crew. Become a director’s assistant or a playwright. You can even act or perform. Organizational tasks always need help.
Die bühne stages productions at the Weberbau studio stage. This is located at Teplitzer Str. 26. Each season brings four to five productions. Smaller projects are co-led by students and professionals.

Max Schumacher is the artistic director. Die bühne is managed by DIE BÜHNE e.V. This is a non-profit organization. The organization believes culture is essential. It promotes theater and amateur dramatics. This happens at the university and in Dresden. The association values high artistic standards. They strive for diverse and modern productions.
Die bühne mainly performs in its own theater. It also makes guest appearances. It presents guest performances and concerts. They offer courses each semester. These include dramaturgy, performance, acting, and improv. Check their website for the program.
Die bühne takes a break from July to October. They also take time off for Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Die bühne received the German Amateur Theater Prize in 2018. They won for “Burning Walls and Urgent Calls.” In 2017, they received the Saxon Amateur Theater Prize. This was for “Der Amateur Schauspieler oder: Are you lonesome tonight?”
