Established in 1978 the Internationales Zentrum für Hochschulforschung INCHER in Kassel boasts a rich history. Initially known as the Wissenschaftliches Zentrum für Berufs- und Hochschulforschung WZI it was the first central institution of the University of Kassel. Its founding aimed to foster continuous scientific reflection on practical higher education challenges. It sought to build a strong foundation for discussions about study objectives and the feasibility of changes within the higher education system.

Professor Ulrich Teichler the first professor of vocational and higher education research shaped the center’s initial direction. His influence extended beyond INCHER impacting German-speaking higher education research. A 2005 external evaluation confirmed the center’s value leading to its continued operation beyond Professor Teichler’s tenure. In March 2006 it officially adopted its current name the International Centre for Higher Education Research INCHER.

The arrival of Professor Georg Krücken as director in 2011 marked a shift. The research focus sharpened concentrating on the interplay between the higher education system and broader societal aspects. Research at the INCHER expanded into related fields like science organization and innovation studies. Guido Bünstorf became the Executive Vice Director in 2016 representing economics within the center’s interdisciplinary research.

INCHER’s work isn’t confined to Germany. Its research often involves international comparisons and collaborations. It even played a key role in founding the Consortium of Higher Education Researchers CHER a global network of scholars. The center regularly welcomes international researchers for extended stays.

One of INCHER’s largest projects was the Kooperationsprojekt Absolventenstudien KOAB a long-running graduate survey. From 2007 to 2017 it partnered with 78 German universities annually surveying approximately 70000 graduates. The data provided valuable insights into studies and career paths. Since 2018 the interdisciplinary ELBHA program investigates the connection between university education and access to elite positions.

Today INCHER remains a vital institution with a staff of 40 to 45 people many of whom are doctoral candidates. Its extensive research has resulted in nearly 2000 publications in academic journals and books. INCHER’s legacy is one of continuous evolution adapting to changes in higher education while maintaining its commitment to rigorous research and international collaboration. This remarkable institution stands as a testament to the power of sustained academic inquiry. Its influence resonates far beyond Kassel’s borders.
