Gateway Sculpture – Sails

A ripple of wind whispers through the “Sails” above us. Here stands the Gateway Sculpture, a dynamic landmark welcoming you to the City of Maribyrnong. This striking 10-meter sculpture by Geoffrey Bartlett was installed at the Hopkins Street Bridge in Footscray in 2023. The Gateway Sculpture, officially titled “Maribyrnong,” is more than just a pretty sight. It embodies the spirit of this place, its past and present intertwined. The sculpture’s design evokes the area’s rich boat-building heritage. Its abstract steel sails, crafted from durable painted steel, copper, and bronze, seem to dance in perpetual motion, capturing the essence of a ship sailing down the river. Bartlett, a renowned Melbourne sculptor, drew inspiration from the river and the maritime history of Footscray. He envisioned a form in transition, constantly moving, as if blown by the wind. This dynamism is what captivated the selection panel, choosing Bartlett’s design from among 89 high-caliber submissions. The Gateway Sculpture is a key feature of the Joseph Road Precinct, alongside the developing Lilardia Park. It serves as a focal point for residents, pedestrians, and commuters, offering stunning views from Hopkins Street Bridge, Joseph Road, and the Maribyrnong River itself. Look closely, and you’ll notice the herringbone patterning on the sculpture, mirroring the facade of the Boat House development. This subtle detail is a tribute to the timber decking of boats, further connecting the sculpture to Footscray’s maritime past. The Gateway Sculpture is more than just a piece of art. It’s a symbol of Footscray’s transformation, a testament to its vibrant cultural landscape, and a captivating landmark that will continue to inspire for generations to come.
