“A life extinguished, a flame ignited.” Right here, at Az emlékezet lángja, we stand on hallowed ground. This eternal flame, a beacon of remembrance, marks the very spot where Count Lajos Batthyány, Hungary’s first Prime Minister, was executed on October 6, 1849. Az emlékezet lángja isn’t just a monument. It’s a testament to a life tragically cut short, a symbol of resilience, and a reminder of the fight for freedom. Batthyány, entrusted by the ruler himself to form a government, championed legality and constitutionality. Yet, in the tumultuous aftermath of the 1848-49 Revolution, he was unjustly condemned. His initial burial was a clandestine affair at a Franciscan church. Az emlékezet lángja burns where his public execution took place, in the courtyard of the infamous Neugebäude. It wasn’t until 1870, after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, that he received a proper reburial in the Kerepesi Road cemetery. Later, in 1874, he was finally laid to rest in a mausoleum in Fiume Road Graveyard. The desire for a fitting memorial in Pest emerged as early as the 1870s. However, it took decades for the idea to solidify. The centennial of Batthyány’s birth in 1905 spurred action. Journalist József Surányi proposed an “ever-burning lamp,” and the city allocated funds. Architect Móric Pogány won a design competition in 1907, envisioning a grand obelisk adorned with caryatids, symbolizing the nation’s grief. A natural model was even erected in 1909. But financial constraints and the looming World War I derailed the project. Az emlékezet lángja remained a dream deferred. After the war, the idea resurfaced in 1925. Due to inflation, costs soared. Pogány, commissioned again, adapted his design. The final version, unveiled on October 6, 1926, was a more intimate monument. A classicist bronze lamp atop a limestone pedestal. Its inscriptions, “In memory of Count Lajos Batthyány,” “The first responsible Prime Minister of Hungary suffered a martyrdom here, 6 October 1849,” and “Erected by the public of the Capital City of Budapest in 1926,” speak volumes. Az emlékezet lángja stands as a poignant reminder of Batthyány’s sacrifice. It’s a place where history and memory intertwine. It also symbolizes the enduring struggle for Hungarian freedom and independence, making it a focal point for commemorations and demonstrations throughout the years.
