Have you ever wondered about the hidden stories etched into the very stones of a building? Garrison Hall here on the University of Texas campus whispers tales of history. It stands as a testament to the vision of a bygone era. Its construction started in 1925 and finished in 1926. It’s named after George Pierce Garrison the history department’s first chair and a founder of the Texas State Historical Association. He was known for a rather domineering teaching style. He refused to let colleagues teach any US subjects.

Garrison Hall wasn’t always home to just history. In its early years it housed the Department of Psychology. The university moved Psychology to Sutton Hall in 1927 sharing space with Educational Psychology for a quarter of a century. The building’s design expertly blends classical aesthetics with unique Texan iconography. Wide archways and Ionic flourishes meet cacti steer skulls and 32 Texas cattle brands.

Look closely. The names of prominent Texas figures are carved into the stone. Austin Travis Houston and Lamar are among them. These figures are immortalized on its walls. This blend of classical architecture and Texan pride is rare. It makes Garrison Hall truly unique. A less obvious detail is the inclusion of these cattle brands under the eaves. This shows the rich history of the state’s cattle industry. The building’s hollow cornerstone holds a time capsule. It includes university newspapers correspondence and other items from the early 20th century.

Garrison Hall has faced challenges. In the early years bats took up residence. An exchange of letters between William Battle and Goldwin Goldsmith reveals this. Battle reported the unwelcome smell and sight of bats. Goldsmith regretfully admitted he didn’t know how to remove them. The university ultimately dealt with the bat infestation. In 2008 a large renovation modernized the building’s facilities. This restoration carefully preserved its historic features.

Today Garrison Hall remains a vibrant part of the university. It continues to serve as a hub for learning and research. It functions as a time capsule connecting the past to the present. It’s a building that continues to tell a story. It stands as a reminder of the evolution of the University of Texas and Texas itself. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living piece of history. A tangible link to the past. Take a moment to appreciate its unique charm and the fascinating stories it holds within its walls.
