The Holy Apostles, standing proudly on Winchester Street, stands as a testament to the resilience of faith in the face of adversity. In 1917, a former Methodist chapel in Claverton Street was transformed into a Catholic church. It was dedicated to the Holy Apostles and served as a chapel-of-ease, a term for a church that was dependent on a larger church for its priests. The church was a beacon of hope for Catholics in Pimlico, but its existence was tragically cut short in 1941.

During the Second World War, Pimlico experienced heavy bombing. The night of April 16th, 1941, brought a particular devastating air raid. The Holy Apostles, then still in Claverton Street, was hit, leaving the church unusable. Imagine the devastation and the sense of loss that must have filled the hearts of the parishioners. Following the bombing, the parish community was left without a proper church for over 16 years. They gathered in makeshift places, churches, houses, and even a pre-fabricated building on the site of the old church in Claverton Street. In spite of their hardships, they continued to gather and worship, their faith unwavering.

With the end of the war, a new era arrived in the heart of London. But the location of the church was needed for the Churchill Gardens Estate. The future of the Holy Apostles was uncertain. The authorities refused to release any land for a new church, so Father Edmund Hadfield, the parish priest, decided to take a bold step to secure a new home for his parish. He cycled around the parish at night, planting Miraculous Medals on bombsites. With persistence, Father Hadfield’s efforts paid off. He finally secured a site on Winchester and Cumberland Streets. The new Holy Apostles rose from the ashes, built through the incredible sacrifices of the parishioners. Built in 1957, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and a symbol of hope for the parishioners that survived the war.

The Holy Apostles, like the city of London, has endured much over the years, from wars and destruction to times of peace and rebuilding. It continues to be a thriving, vibrant community, inviting people to share worship and fellowship. The Holy Apostles, a haven of faith in the heart of London, offers a reminder that even in the face of adversity, the spirit of faith endures.
