Gazing across the shimmering Adriatic, the island of Lopud beckons. Lopud, the “island in the middle,” is nestled between Kolocep and Sipan, part of the Elaphiti Islands. Lopud is more than just a picturesque island. It’s a treasure chest overflowing with history, sandy beaches, and captivating tales. Lopud’s story begins long before the arrival of the Slavs in the 9th century. Ancient Greeks and Romans frequented this island, recognizing its strategic location. The whispers of their presence linger in the very name Lopud, perhaps derived from the Greek “Delaphodia.” By the 15th and 16th centuries, Lopud had entered its golden age. Its skillful seamen navigated the world’s oceans, trading even with the Americas. Shipbuilding flourished. The island pulsed with economic and cultural energy. Monasteries, including Franciscan (1483) and Dominican (1482) orders, became centers of learning. They nurtured literacy and even offered the first three grades of high school within the Dominican walls. This emphasis on education may have contributed to the navigational prowess of Lopud’s sailors. At its peak, Lopud boasted a population of around 2,000. The island contributed eighty ships to the Ragusa Republic’s merchant fleet. Imagine the bustling harbor, the vibrant marketplace, and the constant hum of activity. This prosperity is echoed in the numerous streets, houses, and over thirty churches and chapels that once graced Lopud. Sadly, Lopud’s fortunes waned from the 17th century. Economic decline mirrored a dwindling population. Napoleon’s conquest in 1808 silenced the monasteries. During Austro-Hungarian rule, the islanders turned to fishing, agriculture, and sailing on merchant ships, often seeking work abroad, especially in the USA. A brief but dramatic chapter unfolded on July 22, 1813. Marines and seamen from HMS Saracen and HMS Weazel stormed Lopud, capturing the French garrison and their six guns. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, weaving became a vital industry, empowering the women of Lopud. Imagine the rhythmic clatter of over 50 looms transforming the island into a center of textile production. Areas now covered in lush vegetation were once carefully cultivated olive groves, supporting nineteen olive mills. The 20th century brought tourism, providing a stable period for Lopud from 1927 to 1990. However, the Croatian War of Independence (1991-1995) dealt a heavy blow, leading to economic hardship and depopulation. Today, Lopud offers a quieter experience. The 2021 census recorded a population of 278. The island’s sandy beaches, particularly the breathtaking bay of Šunj, draw visitors seeking tranquility and natural beauty. Lopud is a testament to resilience. From its ancient origins to its vibrant golden age, through periods of decline and conflict, it has endured. A visit to Lopud is a journey through time.
