Have you ever wondered what it would be like to stand on a piece of land that was mined for coal centuries ago? Right here, in Pennypit Park, you are standing on such a place, looking out across a sports complex, a testament to the resilient spirit of Prestonpans. Pennypit Park is the home of Preston Athletic Football Club, a club deeply rooted in the town’s history. Back in 1945, during a time of economic hardship, the club was established by local miners who chipped in a penny each week to keep their beloved sport alive. This park, a symbol of shared passion and community spirit, was aptly named Pennypit, a tribute to these dedicated miners. The pitch was planted in the 1950s, and a pavilion was constructed in the 1970s thanks to the efforts of local rugby enthusiasts and the East Lothian District Council. In 1992, the park was in need of revitalization. The Pennypit Community Trust stepped in and raised a substantial \u00a35,000 to renovate the park. The renovations were completed in 1994, resulting in the Pennypit Park we see today. Today, Pennypit Park is a vibrant hub, hosting not only football matches but rugby games as well. The grandstand, which towers over the field, offers a panoramic view of the match. The seats of the stand, made of metallic benches, are worn with age, each one telling a silent story of countless victories and defeats. Look closely at the dugouts, they are branded with the Preston Athletic badge, indicating a modern touch to a legacy rich in history. Pennypit Park is a true community space, a place where history and sport intertwine, a place where memories are made, and a place where the spirit of Prestonpans lives on.
