“What whispers of love and loss linger on Sevda Tepesi?” This is a place where romance meets tragedy. It is a place forever marked by a poignant tale. Sevda Tepesi offers more than just a scenic view. It provides a glimpse into a story etched in Istanbul’s heart.

Sevda Tepesi is near Anadolu Hisarı. It covers 57,140 square meters. Once part of the Kibrisli Yalı’s grove, it boasts trees that are 300 years old. The hill’s name changed because of a sorrowful love story.

Let me take you back to the 1930s. A young lieutenant named Vahit lived in Kandilli. People called him Valentino Vahit. This was because he resembled the famous actor Rudolph Valentino. Vahit fell deeply in love with Belkıs Safer. Belkıs was a beautiful girl from a wealthy family.

Their romance blossomed. They often met in the grove behind the Kibrisli Yalı. This is the very spot where Vahit proposed. However their families opposed their union. Belkıs’s father wanted her to marry Emin Dirvana. Emin was one of the inheritors of the yalı. Vahit’s mother had already chosen a bride from Bursa for him.

Overwhelmed by despair, Vahit summoned Belkıs to this hill in July 1931. Here at Sevda Tepesi, they tragically ended their lives together. The Cumhuriyet newspaper reported the event. From that day forward, the spot became known as Sevda Tepesi. Sevda Tepesi translates to “Love Hill”. It is a name that reflects the deep emotions.

Sevda Tepesi became famous. It often appeared in Yeşilçam films. These movies captured the beauty and drama of the location. In 1982, Saudi King Abdullah bought Sevda Tepesi for a reported 27 million dollars. There were controversies. People feared that development would endanger Istanbul’s green spaces. Zeynep Dirvana claimed they sold it for only 1 million dollars. She questioned where the remaining money went.

Today Sevda Tepesi remains a place of reflection. It is a place of remembrance and natural beauty. Istanbul lovers often visit this spot. They seek solace and a connection to the past. As you stand here, imagine the young lovers Vahit and Belkıs. Envision their hopes and despair. Feel the echoes of their tragic love story.

Take a moment to appreciate the panoramic views. Note the meeting of green and blue. Let the story of Sevda Tepesi remind you. Love can be both beautiful and heart-wrenching. This hill is a testament to a love that time cannot erase.
