Santo António’s journey started at the Monastery of St. Vincent on the outskirts of Lisbon. Seeking a more focused spiritual life, he moved to Coimbra, then Portugal’s capital. It was there that the story of five Franciscan martyrs in Morocco ignited a fire in his soul. He joined the Franciscan order, taking the name António. His powerful preaching quickly gained him recognition. He journeyed to Italy, becoming a provincial superior in the north and choosing Padua as his base. His sermons, described as a “jewel case of the Bible,” even earned him the title “Ark of the Testament” by Pope Gregory IX.
Santo António’s life was filled with stories of miracles. One tale speaks of him preaching to the fish in Rimini, captivating even the heretics who had scorned him. Another tells of a mule that, presented with fodder, instead bowed before the Blessed Sacrament held by Santo António. His ability to connect with the common people and his profound understanding of scripture made him a beloved figure. His life was tragically cut short by illness in 1231. He passed away at the young age of 35. He was canonized less than a year later, a testament to the impact he had on the world.
