High on a hill overlooking the Antalya plain sits Sillyon. Can you feel the weight of history pressing down on us? Sillyon whispers tales of empires and armies, resilience and ruin. This ancient city, known in Greek as Sillyon, has witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations. It has stood defiant against some of history’s mightiest conquerors.

Sillyon’s origins are shrouded in myth and legend. Some say it was founded by heroes returning from the Trojan War. Others claim it was a colony of Argos. What we know for sure is that Sillyon was already established by 500 BC. Its imposing fortifications and strategic location made it a coveted prize.

Imagine Alexander the Great, fresh from his victories across Persia, arriving at the gates of Sillyon in 333 BC. The city, perched atop its rocky plateau, must have seemed impregnable. According to Arrian, Alexander’s initial assault was repulsed. The defenders, a mix of mercenaries and “native barbarians,” held firm. Pressed for time, Alexander was forced to abandon the siege. Sillyon, against all odds, had resisted one of history’s greatest military minds.

The city flourished under the Seleucids, the successors of Alexander. They rebuilt and expanded Sillyon, including its impressive theatre. The city even minted its own coins, a testament to its prosperity and independence. Sillyon remained a free city even as the Attalid kingdom swallowed up much of western Asia Minor. The Roman Senate itself decreed Sillyon’s autonomy.

Sillyon’s fortunes continued to rise during the Byzantine era. The city’s fortifications once again proved their worth. They repelled Arab raids in the 7th century. Sillyon became an important administrative center, the seat of an imperial representative. It even eclipsed the nearby city of Perge, becoming the seat of a bishopric.

But even Sillyon could not withstand the tide of history forever. In 1207, the Seljuk Turks conquered the city. Sillyon, once a beacon of Greek civilization, became Karahisar-Tekke. The city slowly declined, its grand structures crumbling into ruin.

Today, as we stand here amidst the ruins of Sillyon, we can still sense its former glory. The remains of city gates, a stadium, an amphitheater, a temple, and a gymnasium litter the hillside. These silent stones whisper stories of a city that defied empires, a city that played a vital role in the tapestry of history. Sillyon’s story, though fragmented and faded, is a testament to human resilience and the enduring power of the past.
