Did you ever hear of a shopping mall changing its name not once, but twice? Here at Dandenong Square, that’s exactly what happened. This bustling hub wasn’t always called Dandenong Square. It started life in 1989 as Capital Centre. Then, it had a growth spurt in 1995, connecting with the existing Myer store and becoming Dandenong Plaza. Fast forward to 2024, and another transformation occurred. Dandenong Plaza got a fresh coat of paint, a new name, and became the Dandenong Square we know and love today. Dandenong Square is a major regional shopping centre. It’s about 30 kilometers southeast of Melbourne’s CBD. It boasts three levels packed with stores, two food courts, and even a Fresh Food Hall. You can find everything you need here. You’ll also be close to the Dandenong Market and the Dandenong Hub. Dandenong Square has seen its share of retail giants come and go. Myer, a former anchor store, closed its doors in 2013 after nearly 40 years in Dandenong. Target followed suit in 2022, and even Village Cinemas packed up their projectors in 2008. Other stores like Best & Less, Trade Secret (later replaced by TK Maxx), JB Hi-Fi Home, EB Games, Cotton On, and Daiso have also moved on. Despite these changes, Dandenong Square thrives with a wide variety of shops and services. It remains a vital part of the Dandenong community. So, next time you’re strolling through Dandenong Square, remember its journey from Capital Centre to Plaza, and finally, to the Square it is today. It’s a testament to Dandenong’s ever-evolving landscape.
