Have you ever heard of a street named after a soldier who died during a fight in World War II? Avenue Charles Mossler in the small town of Savigny-sur-Orge is just that. It’s a typical French avenue, lined with trees and shops. But its quiet charm hides a powerful story.

On August 24, 1944, a column of French soldiers, part of the 2nd Armored Division, entered Savigny-sur-Orge. Their mission was to liberate the town from German occupation. Charles Mossler, a young soldier, was part of the group. He cycled ahead of a van carrying other soldiers. He wore a German helmet for protection. The group arrived at a crossroad where American troops were approaching. The Americans, mistaking Charles’ helmet for an enemy soldier, opened fire.

Charles Mossler was killed instantly. His life was cut short, but not forgotten – it was a life, though brief, dedicated to the fight for freedom. The avenue that bears his name serves as a reminder of his sacrifice. It’s a quiet street, but its silence speaks volumes about the bravery of the soldiers who fought for France during World War II. It is also a reminder that even in the most peaceful of places, war’s legacy can still be found in the names etched on our streets.
