Did the walls of Musée Ernest-Hébert whisper secrets of a bygone era? Here we stand before the Musée Ernest-Hébert, nestled within the elegant Hôtel de Montmorency-Bours. This charming museum, tucked away on rue du Cherche-Midi in Paris’s 6th arrondissement, once showcased the life and works of Ernest Hébert, a prominent French painter of the Second Empire and Third Republic. The Musée Ernest-Hébert opened its doors in 1978, a testament to the generosity of René Patris d’Uckermann, Hébert’s adopted son. The Hôtel de Montmorency-Bours itself has a rich history, dating back to 1743. It’s believed to have been formed by combining several houses. Imagine the stories these walls could tell. In 1752, the Comte Joseph-Alexandre de Montmorency-Bours acquired the property, lending his name to this historic building. He later commissioned the construction of the neighboring “Grand Hôtel de Montmorency,” further solidifying the family’s presence in this area. Hébert, renowned for his society portraits, also drew inspiration from his travels to Italy, particularly Rome, where he studied at the Villa Medici. One of his most famous works is the portrait of Countess Greffulhe, which reportedly inspired Proust’s character of Madame de Guermantes in “Remembrance of Things Past.” The Musée Ernest-Hébert housed a collection of Hébert’s paintings, furniture, and personal items, providing a glimpse into his life and artistic process. Sadly, the museum has been closed since 2004 due to structural issues and funding challenges for renovations, awaiting a brighter future when it can once again share its treasures with the world. It remains a hidden gem, a silent keeper of artistic and historical legacy, patiently waiting to be rediscovered.
