Imagine jaguars prowling here long ago. That’s how Tigre got its name. This city north of Buenos Aires wasn’t always the tourist haven it is today.

Tigre sits on an island, formed by the many streams of the Paraná Delta. The city officially came into being in 1820. Floods wiped out earlier settlements. People then called this area Partido de las Conchas.

The port here became vital. It served the delta, bringing fruit and wood from upstream. Even now, Tigre remains an important timber processing hub.

Getting here is easy. You can hop on a bus or train. The Tren de la Costa is especially scenic. Tigre is the heart of the Tigre Partido.

Once, this was a land of farms. Europeans came to cultivate the fertile soil. The jaguars, or “tigres”, were hunted. They gave the area its fierce name.

Today, many visit Tigre on weekends. They come seeking peace and nature. The Paraná Delta offers a maze of green islets and waterways.

Take a boat trip into the delta. Some islets are private. However, many are open for exploration. Tres Bocas is a popular spot. You can hike and enjoy a meal.

Or discover Rama Negra. It is less known and quieter. Wooden bridges connect paths along gardens. You will see beautiful houses on stilts.

Consider visiting Delta Terra. It is a nature reserve. It focuses on conservation and responsible tourism. Explore its visitor center. Walk its trails. You can kayak and dine there.

Some museums require a boat trip. Museo Sarmiento is one of them. It is located on an islet. The museum occupies the former home of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. He was a writer, politician, and former president.

Back in Tigre, explore the Museo de Arte Tigre. This beautiful museum sits on the waterfront. It resembles a small castle dating back to 1912. Inside, admire Argentine art from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Also, visit the Museo Naval. It showcases Argentine naval history. It emphasizes the Guerra de las Malvinas. It even displays the HMS Beagle’s logbook.

Don’t miss the Puerto de Frutos. Once a fruit market, it’s now a crafts fair. You can find anything there from souvenirs to furniture.

Tigre offers more. Visit the Museo del Mate. Or have some fun at Parque de la Costa. It has a Ferris wheel and roller coasters. Try your luck at the Trilenium Casino.

Take a walk through Tigre. Escape the crowds. Discover the town’s hidden beauty. The tourist information point offers maps. Follow the red dotted line.

For the active traveler, Tigre is ideal. Canoe or kayak through the delta. Discover secluded spots.

Tigre blends history, nature, and recreation. It offers something for everyone. So, come explore this unique Argentine city.
