Across the River North Esk stands Lasswade a village steeped in history. Lasswade’s name itself whispers tales. Some say it comes from the Brittonic *lïs* meaning “court” and *wï:d* meaning “wood”. Others suggest an Old English origin “meadow ford”.

Lasswade’s story stretches back centuries. Evidence points to a church active as early as the 9th century. The old parish church built in the 13th century is mostly gone now. It was abandoned in 1793. Its ruins finally collapsed in 1866. Yet within its grounds lies the resting place of William Drummond of Hawthornden a 17th-century Scottish poet.

The river shaped Lasswade’s life. A paper mill thrived here from 1750 until the 20th century. Flour mills and a carpet factory also once hummed with activity. Lasswade was a popular retreat for wealthy Edinburgh residents. They sought refuge from the city in its picturesque valley.

Sir Walter Scott himself lived in Lasswade. He rented Lasswade Cottage from 1798 to 1804. He was visited by James Hogg and the Wordsworths. Famous figures like Thomas de Quincey also lived nearby. William McTaggart a Scottish landscape artist found inspiration in Lasswade’s beauty. His later works capture the Moorfoot Hills.

Lasswade’s charm extends beyond its famous past. Today you’ll find a blend of old and new. There are horse riding stables a golf course an alpine plant nursery and a welcoming pub. Lasswade’s story is one of resilience transformation and enduring charm. A village that changed with the times but never lost its unique identity.
