The lake is southwest of János Hill. It lies along the walking path. The path leads from the Libegő’s upper station. It goes to the Children’s Railway János Hill station.
Béka-tó is not just a pretty sight. It is a haven for wildlife. Frogs abound. They lend their name to Béka-tó. You can also find the European fire-bellied toad. Various aquatic snails and insects thrive here as well. Dragonflies also call this place home.

Béka-tó was not always so unique. In the 1950s similar tarns dotted the Buda Hills. The Istenszeme-tó was one. Another was a small nameless lake. It sat below Disznófő Spring.
In the 1960s Budapest underwent major channeling. Springs feeding these lakes were diverted. The Istenszeme Spring was diverted. The Disznófő Spring also suffered this fate. Even the Csermely Spring was channeled. This caused irreversible damage. The channeling harmed the Buda Hills’ wildlife.
Today Béka-tó stands as a reminder. It reminds us of the importance of preserving natural habitats. It is a testament to nature’s resilience.
