What stories could these walls tell? This is South London. It is more than just a location. It is a vibrant tapestry woven from history, culture, and the lives of millions.

South London sits proudly south of the River Thames. It encompasses boroughs like Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, and Greenwich. South London’s story began in Southwark. Southwark was first known as Suthriganaweorc. That means fort of the men of Surrey.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine the year 1720. John Strype described Southwark as one of London’s four distinct areas. These were the City of London, Westminster, South London, and That Part Beyond the Tower. North London developed later.

South London’s growth was slower than the north. This was because few bridges crossed the Thames. The opening of Westminster Bridge spurred growth in the southwest. The southeast grew slower until the Surrey Commercial Docks were built.

The mid-19th century saw a railway boom. This accelerated South London’s expansion. The County of London formed in 1899. It included boroughs like Wandsworth and Lambeth. Towns in the Home Counties gradually joined South London. This led to the creation of Greater London in 1965.

Today, South London thrives. It has over thirty bridges to West London and the City. Only Tower Bridge connects it to East London. The underground rail network is limited here. This is due to challenging geology. New technology may improve this with the Crossrail 2 line. South London boasts an extensive overground rail network. All of London’s trams operate here.

South London has seen formal use of its name. The government asked the Boundary Commission for England to review parliamentary constituencies in 2017. The south London sub-region included 11 boroughs south of the river.

South London enjoys a temperate maritime climate. The Met Office collects data from weather stations like Kew and Hampton. Greenwich has long-term climate records dating back to 1763. Temperatures rise closer to the Thames due to urban warming. The highest temperature recorded in south London was 38.1 °C at Kew Gardens.

As we conclude our visit to South London, remember its rich past. It is a place of constant change and growth. South London is a vital part of London’s identity.
