New City Church

What if a church could be more than just a place of worship? What if it was a catalyst for change, a beacon of hope, a center for healing? Right here, at 3104 16th Avenue South, stands New City Church, a testament to the power of community and the pursuit of justice. New City Church isn’t your typical church. It’s a vibrant hub of activity, born from a unique partnership and driven by a vision of a better world. New City Church focuses on environmental justice, welcoming a diverse community that reflects the “new city” described in Revelation 21. This vision of inclusivity extends to all, regardless of racial/ethnic identities, socioeconomic statuses, gender and sexual identities, intellectual and physical abilities, immigration statuses, and religious beliefs. In 2022, New City Church expanded its reach by launching a second location in Northeast Minneapolis. This expansion demonstrates their commitment to serving the broader community. New City Church’s mission is to create inspired and skilled communities that join God in transforming the world. They believe inward transformation through worship, prayer, and spiritual practices can lead to outward transformation, such as justice for people and the planet. This commitment to action is evident in their dedication to centering marginalized voices, creating space for those often unheard in broader society. This includes a focus on the lives and experiences of Black, indigenous, and people of color, as well as queer people, particularly trans and nonbinary individuals. New City Church also prioritizes the earth, recognizing the interconnectedness of all creation. This commitment to social justice is deeply rooted in their history. In a remarkable act of generosity, the aging Walker Community United Methodist Church gifted its building to the younger New City Church. This handover wasn’t a merger, but a passing of the torch, allowing new generations to continue the legacy of faith and social action in the Powderhorn neighborhood. This building, now known as the New City Center for Healing Justice, serves as a hub for various community groups, including Southside Harm Reduction Services and Kaleidoscope Healing Arts. It’s a place where healing, activism, and faith intersect, strengthening the neighborhood’s resilience in the face of adversity. New City Church’s story is one of transformation, partnership, and a deep commitment to justice. It’s a story that continues to unfold within these walls, inviting all to join in the work of creating a more just and compassionate world.
