“Splendeurs et miseres” or splendors and miseries. That’s how some locals describe Rue Guichard. Today, we will delve into the story of this intriguing street in Marseille.

Rue Guichard, a street seemingly like any other, holds secrets of urban life. It reveals stories of resilience and change. The street is located in the Saint Mauront area.

Once, Rue Guichard faced challenges of urban decay. Buildings fell into disrepair. Some became uninhabitable, and were even squatted. The city recognized the need for intervention. A project aimed to rehabilitate homes was planned.

In one instance, a demolition took place near Rue Guichard. An unsanitary housing block in the Saint Mauront neighborhood was torn down. This was a complex operation. An adjacent school, homes, shops, and Rue Guichard itself created a tight environment. Special safety measures were needed.

To protect Rue Guichard during demolition, authorities partially closed the street. A thick layer of material was laid down. This protected the pavement from falling debris. It also provided a path for demolition machinery. The demolition occurred on a public holiday. This minimized disruption to the nearby school. A mechanical shovel with a long arm was used.

After demolition, the site was restored. Soil and vegetation were added. A fence was erected around the perimeter. This transformation marked a new chapter for the area.

But Rue Guichard isn’t only about demolition and construction. Not far from here, at the end of Rue Guichard, there’s a gem. It is one of the last, or perhaps the last, traditional Provençal wash houses in Marseille. The wash house dates back to the 18th century. It used stones from Cassis. Sadly, the interior was once filled with trash.

However, there is also a beautiful story to tell about Rue Guichard. Not far from the wash house, there’s a “Passage Jardinier.” This is a community garden. It was created by Didier Courbot. Locals express satisfaction in contributing to the neighborhood’s beauty. They take pride in ownership of the space.

The residents handed a petition to officials. They were denouncing the neglect they had endured for years. The CIQ requested a meeting with the official in charge of the RHI. RHI is the Resorption de l’Habitat Insalubre. It refers to clearing unsanitary housing.

Rue Guichard embodies contrasts. It shows both the splendor of community gardens and the misery of neglect. It is a place of ongoing transformation.

As we leave Rue Guichard, consider its story. Think about the challenges it has faced. Imagine the community’s determination to create beauty amid hardship. The story of Rue Guichard is a reminder. Urban streets are living stories.
