Clatter echoing from within, metal carts trundling down a long hallway, the faint scent of formaldehyde – these were once familiar sounds and smells at the Pathologisches Institut. This imposing building, now silent and still, holds over a century of Bremen’s medical history within its walls. The Pathologisches Institut was completed in 1913, designed by Ludwig Beermann and Hugo Weber. It served as a dedicated space for the study of diseases, a relatively late addition to the St. Jörgen-Krankenhaus (now Klinikum Bremen-Mitte), which was founded much earlier. Interestingly, the Pathologisches Institut wasn’t just a place for examining tissues and performing autopsies. It also housed the hospital’s clinical chemistry department and even the city’s forensic medicine unit. Imagine the hushed conversations between police officers and doctors in the designated interrogation room, just steps away from the mortuary with its chillingly efficient cooling chambers. The building’s design, though austere on the outside, hid a surprisingly intricate main staircase, bathed in natural light. This architectural feature speaks to the attention to detail woven throughout the building. Even amidst the scientific pursuit of understanding disease, there was an appreciation for design and aesthetics. Even beyond its medical purpose, the Pathologisches Institut holds a unique place in popular culture. In 1966, it was visited by the renowned Belgian mystery writer Georges Simenon and Heinz Rühmann, the actor portraying Simenon’s famous detective Maigret. They were conducting research for the film “Maigret und sein größter Fall,” parts of which were filmed right here in Bremen. Today, the Pathologisches Institut stands as a testament to Bremen’s medical past, a tangible link to an era when this imposing structure buzzed with activity. The building awaits its next chapter, its story yet to be fully written.
