“A plaque? Is that all that remains of such a vibrant life?” I hear you whisper. Let me tell you about the Michael Balfe Plaque. This unassuming London landmark tells the story of a man who composed at least 29 operas. He wrote almost 250 songs and several cantatas. Michael Balfe’s music was once immensely popular. His compositions graced theatres across Britain. His melodies filled Victorian homes.

The plaque itself is a simple tribute. It stands quietly at 12 Seymour Street Marylebone. It commemorates a life of extraordinary musical achievement. Balfe wasn’t just a composer. He was a virtuoso violinist. A celebrated opera singer. A renowned conductor. He held the prestigious position of musical director at Her Majesty’s Theatre. He directed Italian Opera there for seven years.

His journey began in Dublin. Born on May 15 1808 his musical talent emerged early. His father a dancing master and violinist provided his first lessons. Balfe’s family later moved to Wexford. Even at the tender age of seven he composed a polacca. By age nine he was performing publicly as a violinist. He even composed his first ballad “Young Fanny” later renamed “The Lovers’ Mistake”.

After his father’s death Balfe moved to London. He joined the orchestra at Drury Lane. He honed his skills under Charles Edward Horn and Charles Frederick Horn. His operatic career began in Norwich with an unsuccessful debut. However this setback was a mere prelude to his future triumphs. A wealthy patron Count Mazzara took him to Rome. There he studied under the legendary Luigi Cherubini. He even became a protégé of Rossini himself. Balfe’s career flourished in Italy. He wrote his first ballet “La Perouse”. He met and married the singer Lina Roser around 1831 in Lugano Switzerland. They had four children.

Balfe’s greatest triumph “The Bohemian Girl” premiered in London in 1843. It ran for over 100 nights. Its success was phenomenal. Productions were mounted internationally. Even today “The Bohemian Girl” remains his most enduring work. It’s a testament to his enduring talent. He continued composing prolifically. He wrote “The Armourer of Nantes” in 1863. He penned many beloved songs including “I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls”.

Balfe retired to Hertfordshire in 1864. He died at Rowney Abbey Ware in 1870 aged 62. He was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery. His legacy lives on not only in his music but also in this plaque. It’s a small but significant marker. It stands as a reminder of a remarkable life. A life dedicated to music. A life that continues to resonate even today. This is Michael Balfe’s enduring legacy. Look at the plaque. Feel the echoes of his genius.
