Ever wondered what it’s like to be at the forefront of medical innovation? Here at the Eye and Ear on the Park in East Melbourne, you’re standing on ground that has witnessed over 160 years of groundbreaking advancements in eye, ear, nose, and throat care. This isn’t just any hospital. The Eye and Ear is Australia’s only dedicated specialist facility for these senses.

Our story begins in 1863 with Dr. Andrew Sexton Gray. He was an Irish medical practitioner. Dr. Gray saw a critical need. Many couldn’t afford treatment for eye and ear diseases, especially miners from the Victorian gold fields. He established the Eye and Ear Infirmary. People could pay what they could afford. Imagine the relief those patients felt.

Modeled after London’s Moorfields Eye Hospital, Dr. Gray’s infirmary quickly became a vital resource. He defended the hospital’s resources. He prioritized those in need. His dedication helped establish ophthalmology as a specialty in Australia. It also built the Eye and Ear’s reputation for excellence.

Did you know Dr. Gray had a famous connection? He studied under Sir William Wilde in Ireland. Wilde was the father of the renowned writer Oscar Wilde. Also, Dr. Gray is the great-great-great grandfather of Australian actor Simon Baker.

In 1866, the infirmary became Victoria’s third public hospital. Queen Elizabeth II granted it Royal Charter in 1961. It became the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. The Eye and Ear has evolved. It has grown with Melbourne. It has constantly adapted to meet the community’s needs.

Standing here, consider the hospital’s three wings. There is the Aubrey Bowen Wing, built in 1896. The Peter Howson Wing was built in 1974. The Smorgon Family Wing was commissioned in 1987. A tunnel even connects the Eye and Ear to St Vincent’s Hospital.

The Eye and Ear achieved a global milestone in 1978. Professor Graeme Clark and his team performed the world’s first multi-channel cochlear implant surgery here. It was the Bionic Ear. This groundbreaking work led to the establishment of the Bionic Ear Institute at the hospital. Bionic Ear Lane commemorates Clark’s contributions.

Today, the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital manages a huge number of patients. They treat about 180,000 outpatients yearly. They admit about 13,000 inpatients. They perform about 14,000 surgeries. The Emergency Department operates 24/7. It handles around 47,000 presentations a year. Most are ophthalmology cases.

The Eye and Ear is a world leader in its field. It performs nearly all of Victoria’s public cochlear implant surgeries. It also delivers all the state’s public general eye surgery. The hospital is constantly evolving. A digitisation project improves clinic appointments. Self check-in kiosks and digital displays now communicate information to patients.

As you stand here at the Eye and Ear on the Park, remember the countless individuals who have walked through these doors. Remember Dr. Gray’s vision. Remember the pioneering spirit of Professor Clark. Appreciate the hospital’s dedication to innovation and patient care. The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital remains a beacon of hope. It ensures the community can experience the world to its fullest.
