Here at the Lloyd Gymnasium, we find ourselves standing before a place of learning. It is also a site marked by both growth and resilience. Established long ago, this school has evolved. It has shaped countless lives in Bremerhaven.

Originally, the Lloyd Gymnasium was simply known as the Bremerhaven Gymnasium. It stood proudly on Grazer Strasse. After 1945, it took on a new identity. It was renamed Bürgermeister Smidt School. This name honored a significant local figure. The institution later became Schulzentrum Bürgermeister Smidt.

In 2004, a significant change occurred. The school was renamed Lloyd Gymnasium. That same year, Pestalozzischule I on Wiener Strasse was integrated. Today, the Lloyd Gymnasium comprises two parts. One part is the original Bremerhaven Gymnasium. The other part is the former Pestalozzischule. The Wiener Strasse building now houses grades 5 to 9. Around 700 students learn here. The Grazer Strasse building serves older students. It hosts the upper grades. About 1000 students attend classes there.

The Lloyd Gymnasium stands out. It is the only complete gymnasium in the city. It has around 1700 students across both locations. The school is recognized as a Europaschule. It embraces European values. These include human rights, democracy and peace.

The Lloyd Gymnasium also emphasizes language skills. It is a certified testing center. Students can take exams in English, Spanish and French. The Cambridge Certificate is offered. This is part of the school’s bilingual program. This program began in 1992.

The school promotes STEM fields. It is known as a MINT-freundliche Schule. Students participate in competitions. These include Jugend forscht and the Mathematics Olympiad.

The Lloyd Gymnasium encourages social responsibility. Students organized Lloyd for Peace. This event showed support for peace.

The Lloyd Gymnasium has faced challenges. In May 2022, a tragic incident occurred. An attack injured one person. The school community showed strength. They showed resilience.

Many notable individuals attended this school. They include historian Otto Heinrich May and politician Helmuth Andreas Koch. Their achievements reflect the school’s impact. August Dierks was also a student here. He helped found the Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum.
