Mont Albert a leafy inner eastern suburb of Melbourne holds a rich history. It’s not just a collection of houses and shops. It’s a place where history whispers in the architecture and the streets.
Imagine 1887. A residential subdivision south of the railway line was offered for sale. This was the seed of Mont Albert. The plan was ambitious fuelled by land speculation. But the 1890s slump slowed progress. Undeterred a local association pushed for a railway station. It opened in 1891 a crucial step in the suburb’s growth. Before houses filled the landscape the Surrey Hills golf club used the land north of the railway lines.
Construction of the local shopping centre began around 1913. It became a hub for the community. Then in 1915 a tram service arrived along Whitehorse Road expanding access to Mont Albert. The houses between the tram and railway lines reflect different architectural styles Edwardian English Domestic Revival and Arts and Crafts.
Mont Albert quickly became an upper middle-class neighbourhood. The impressive three-story brick primary school built in 1917 is a testament to this. It educated many outstanding students including MPs scholars and even a university vice-chancellor. The homes in Mont Albert are spacious sitting on large blocks of land. In 2014 Mont Albert Primary School alone had 691 students.
The shopping centre in Mont Albert has maintained a surprising diversity of shops for a small town. However some businesses were lost when the Salvation Army’s southern headquarters were established there. The eastern edge of Mont Albert is Elgar Road. It’s seen changes a gas factory a technical college and the Elgar campus of Box Hill TAFE. Kingsley Gardens a public reserve sits nearby.
