Nestled on the banks of the River Thames, Shepperton has a rich and captivating history. Shepperton is first mentioned in a document from 959 AD and appears in the Domesday Book. The name Shepperton is thought to mean “shepherd’s farm” or “shepherd’s settlement.” Its peaceful setting and proximity to the river attracted many writers and poets in the 19th century. Among them were Rider Haggard, Thomas Love Peacock, George Meredith, and Percy Bysshe Shelley. The beauty of the Thames at Shepperton even inspired famous painters like Canaletto and Turner to capture its scenery. They painted the iconic Walton Bridge in 1754 and 1805, respectively. To improve river navigation, Shepperton Lock and nearby Sunbury Lock were constructed in the 1810s. These locks helped to facilitate the transportation of goods, making Shepperton a bustling hub for trade along the river. Shepperton remained primarily agricultural until the 19th century. Then a significant change came in 1864 with the construction of the Shepperton Branch Line. This railway line, sponsored by William Schaw Lindsay, the owner of Shepperton Manor, connected Shepperton to London and spurred its growth. The population grew from just over 1,800 in the early 1900s to almost 10,000 in 2011. Shepperton’s history is not just confined to its charming village center. The neighboring village of Littleton is home to the world-famous Shepperton Film Studios. The studios have been the setting for countless iconic films, from classics like “Gladiator” and “Love Actually” to modern blockbusters like “Gravity” and “Thor: The Dark World.” Shepperton embraces its past while also looking towards the future. It combines a tranquil village atmosphere with the vibrancy of a modern economy, attracting both those seeking peace and quiet and those involved in the dynamic world of filmmaking. Shepperton offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that continues to captivate visitors and residents alike.
