Is it possible for a park to be more than just swings and slides? Kucinski-Murphy Park is such a place. It is a small park with a big heart. We are standing at Kucinski-Murphy Park. It is located in Chicago’s McKinley Park neighborhood. This park is more than just a playground. It is a memorial. It is a place of remembrance.

Kucinski-Murphy Park began as 33rd Place Playground. The city established it in 1926. The Bureau of Parks and Recreation improved it. They added an office building and a playing field. In winter, this field became an ice-skating rink. A recreation building followed in 1947.

In 1957, the City transferred the park to the Chicago Park District. This transfer included over 200 other properties. The park district added a spray pool in the late 1960s. They also paved the playground. A soft surface playground arrived in 1990.

For many years, people simply knew it as 33rd Place Playground. But the community remembered two young girls. Their names were Vicki M. Kucinski and Rosebeth Murphy. In the late 1980s, tragedy struck. The neighborhood mourned their loss. In 1999, the park received a new name. It became Kucinski-Murphy Park. This honored Vicki and Rosebeth.

Today, Kucinski-Murphy Park covers 0.74 acres. In 2014, the park was renovated. This renovation was part of the Chicago Plays initiative. It brought a new playground and water feature. Children laugh and play here. The water feature sparkles in the sun.

Imagine the sounds of children’s laughter. Picture the refreshing spray of water on a hot summer day. Think about the community coming together. Kucinski-Murphy Park offers a standard Chicago playground experience. It includes a large play structure. There are also swings. A water spray feature adds to the fun. Benches provide a place to rest. Large trees offer shade.

While Kucinski-Murphy Park does not have structured programs, nearby McKinley Park offers many activities. There, you can find a gym. There is also an outdoor pool. You can even play soccer on an artificial turf.

Kucinski-Murphy Park is more than just a park. It is a place of memories. It is a tribute to Vicki and Rosebeth. It is a reminder of community. As you leave Kucinski-Murphy Park, remember the story. Remember the laughter. Remember Vicki and Rosebeth.
