Did you know that Magdalena Atlitic boasts a history stretching back to ancient times? Nestled between the Sierra de las Cruces and Ajusco mountains this small village in Mexico City’s southwest has a rich past. Magdalena Atlitic isn’t just a pretty name. It’s a blend of cultures a testament to Mexico’s syncretism. Santa Maria Magdalena became the town’s patron saint but the name Atlitic meaning “place of abundant water” was kept. This honored the indigenous heritage and its proximity to two rivers the Eslava River and the renamed Magdalena River.

The story of Magdalena Atlitic is woven into the very fabric of its beautiful Church of Santa Maria Magdalena. Franciscan friars built a small chapel here in the 16th century. Over centuries it was rebuilt and expanded into the impressive Baroque structure we see today. Some Mudejar elements add to its unique beauty. Inside a magnificent neoclassical altar and a huge painting of Mary Magdalene still greet visitors. It’s more than just a church it’s a national historical monument declared so in 1932. Its walls have witnessed centuries of prayers celebrations and community life.

Magdalena Atlitic wasn’t just a religious center it also played a significant role in Mexico’s textile industry. Jeronimo de Leon was a pioneer. He used a waterwheel to produce textiles as early as 1543. The Contreras family later bought his facilities. They further expanded the industry. Their family name is even part of the region’s name La Magdalena Contreras. By the 19th century water power fueled wool and clothing production. El Aguila or The Eagle one of the last factories opened by the Contreras family in 1849. Today parts of this workshop including its main building are preserved within the Magdalena Contreras Cultural Forum.

The nearby Los Dinamos power stations provided energy for these factories for over a century. Today Los Dinamos is a stunning ecological preserve. It’s a reminder of the area’s industrial past and its transformation into a natural beauty spot. Magdalena Atlitic’s story is one of water industry faith and resilience. It’s a charming place that seamlessly blends history and nature.
