On April 4 1976 a new chapter began. The Free Salvation Missionary Baptist Church was founded. Sixteen believers joined Reverend Winfield Phillips. They met in a small storefront at 7431 South Chicago Avenue. This humble beginning marked the start of a vibrant community.

The Free Salvation Missionary Baptist Church quickly grew. More people joined. New ministries formed. A choir a first aid auxiliary ushers and a Sunday school flourished. Within two and a half years the congregation outgrew its space. God provided the funds. They purchased a vacant funeral chapel at 1420 East 87th Street. Zoning issues forced a move. The church found its present home at 7549 South Phillips Avenue.

During its time on 87th Street several ministers were called. Reverend Louis D Jones Reverend Leslie Jackson and Reverend Ralph Jones all pastored their own churches later. In 1995 Reverend Phillips faced health challenges. Reverend Derrick Branch stepped in as overseer. He later became pastor of Anointed Hands Christian Ministries.

Years later Reverend Phillips’ health again required assistance. Reverend Louis D Jones became pastor. He served for three years before retiring to Atlanta Georgia. Reverend Victor Phillips and Minister Antonio Watkins then became co-pastors. They preached and taught God’s word tirelessly.

In December 2008 Reverend Victor Phillips was installed as pastor. Elder Antonio Watkins became assistant pastor. The Free Salvation Missionary Baptist Church has seen changes. It has faced hard times and weathered storms. Yet it has endured. The church continues to trust in the Lord. It celebrates its enduring faith and its commitment to its community. The Free Salvation Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to perseverance and the power of faith.
