We are now standing right in front of Hirsch Metropolitan High School. The school has a long history. It was built in 1926. Did you know that the original building was designed by the same architect as Sullivan High School? The buildings are practically identical on both the inside and the outside. But how did Hirsch become a high school? You see, from 1926 on, the school initially served as a junior high school for grades seven through nine but it became a high school in 1933. The school’s name was changed to Emil G. Hirsch Metropolitan High School of Communications in 1982. However, in 2004, it was shortened to its current name, Hirsch Metropolitan High School. You probably know that there’s a very good reason that the school bears Emil G. Hirsch’s name.  Emil G. Hirsch was a civic-minded rabbi who contributed a lot to the Reform Jewish Movement. This reform movement within Judaism is sometimes referred to as liberal Judaism. Hirsch is also known for its strong athletics program.  Hirsch competes in the Chicago Public League (CPL).  They are nicknamed The Huskies.  In 1972-73,  the boys’ basketball team won the public league championship and the state championship.  But enough about the past. What’s happening now? Hirsch Metropolitan High School is a place where young people learn and grow together. Looking at the front of the building, its handsome red brick façade with cream-colored terra cotta details is a sight to behold. The eclectic building combines elements of the Gothic and English Tudor revival styles. This school is an impressive building with many different sections of rooms and hallways.  Its very own swimming pool, an abundance of different sports facilities, and its own kitchen and cafeteria make this school a unique place.
