Ever wondered what it’s like to shop where history echoes? That’s the Wei\u00dferitz-Park. This isn’t just another shopping center. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine.
The Wei\u00dferitz-Park in Freital is huge. Its ground area measures approximately 100,000 square meters. Around 2.3 million people visit it every year. This makes it one of the largest shopping and leisure parks near Dresden. It gets its name from the Rote Wei\u00dferitz River. The river flows close to the complex.
Imagine this complex as one of the oldest. The buildings are more than 100 years old. They stand right next to the Wei\u00dferitztalbahn. This detail adds a unique charm. Before becoming a shopping center, the Wei\u00dferitz-Park was once one of three production sites. These sites belonged to the Leipziger Buntgarnwerke.
Inside the Wei\u00dferitz-Park, a pyramid-shaped skylight stands above the shopping passage. This architectural feature allows natural light. This illuminates the space where events frequently take place.
Let’s step back in time. In 1992, the Leipziger Buntgarnwerke GmbH was privatized. Production moved to the Czech Republic. That same year, renovations began. The halls were transformed. In 1994, the shopping park opened. Initially, it was named “Buga-Center”. This name came from “Buntgarnwerke.” The first owner was the Erste Lilienstein Verwaltungsgesellschaft.
Later in 1998, the leisure center “Hains” opened after its renovation. To mark this occasion, the area including Hains and Buga-Center was renamed “Wei\u00dferitz-Park.”
The Rote Wei\u00dferitz caused significant damage to the park during the 2002 floods. However, repairs were completed quickly. The center reopened after only three months. In later years, some buildings were renovated. A new building with additional retail spaces was added. In 2007, the complex was sold to a company from Luxembourg. An investment company from London acquired the Wei\u00dferitz-Park in 2011.
Expansion and renovation plans started in September 2011. Construction began in November 2012. Park areas were removed to make way for expansion. To compensate for lost parking spaces, the former Zur Spinnerei inn was torn down. New parking areas were created there. By the end of August 2013, the expansion was complete. The fashion chain C&A opened in the new space.
In 2019, ownership changed again. The new owner became HEICO Grundversorgung Invest 6 GmbH & Co. KG.
Getting here is easy. You can use the Freital city bus line 160. There are two stops. One is at the main entrance. The other is at “Hains.” You can also take the Wei\u00dferitztalbahn to the “Freital-Co\u00dfmannsdorf” stop. The park offers 650 parking spaces.
The Wei\u00dferitz-Park isn’t just shops. It also hosts regular events. These include music shows and back-to-school promotions. A free center magazine called “Wei\u00dferitz-Park live” is published monthly. It features news about the Hains leisure center and the shopping park.
Today, the Wei\u00dferitz-Park offers a mix of retail and leisure. Over 60 stores are located here including restaurants. Its blend of historical architecture and modern offerings creates a unique shopping experience. The Wei\u00dferitz-Park is more than a shopping destination. It’s a place where the echoes of the past meet the vibrancy of the present.
