“A hidden gem of creativity.” That’s how many describe the Blue Elephant Theatre right here in Southwark. The Blue Elephant Theatre might be small with only 50 seats, but it bursts with energy. Established in 1999, it’s become a champion for emerging artists, especially in the world of physical and dance theatre.
The Blue Elephant Theatre has a fascinating connection with the works of Mervyn Peake, the author of the Gormenghast fantasy series. This theatre has developed a reputation for bringing Peake’s lesser-known works to life. They even hosted a talk by Peake’s own son, Sebastian, back in 2008! In 2010, the Blue Elephant Theatre staged the world premiere of Peake’s play “The Cave”. And as a tribute during his centenary celebrations in 2011, they held readings of his other plays, “Noah’s Ark” and “Mr Loftus, or A Horse of Air”. The Blue Elephant Theatre even staged the theatre premiere of “Noah’s Ark,” which had only been a radio play before. Imagine experiencing the world of Gormenghast brought to life on this very stage!
