Did you know that Morro do Cantagalo offers one of the most privileged views of Rio? It rises between Ipanema and Copacabana. This location gives it a unique perspective. Despite its prime location, Morro do Cantagalo faces serious social challenges. These include poverty, violence, and drug trafficking.
Morro do Cantagalo is more than just a place. It is a community of around 5000 residents. They live side by side with stunning natural beauty. The favela is part of a larger community. This community includes Pavão and Pavãozinho. Together, they are known as PPG.
Many social projects work to improve conditions here. These projects receive support from various organizations. These include the United Nations. Several NGOs also help. One example is the Escola Integral Solar Meninos de Luz. It supports 430 children and young people. They range from infants to high school students. Another is the Projeto Mulheres em Ação Literária. It transforms Afro-descendant women into writers for free. The Grupo Cultural AfroReggae is another such project.
Sports figures and artists contribute to social activities in Morro do Cantagalo. Members of Cirque du Soleil have participated. The documentarian João Moreira Salles has also helped. So has the ballerina Ana Botafogo.
The Colégio Presidente João Goulart is also located here. This school hosts citizenship classes. It also offers courses in computer skills plus capoeira and dance lessons. Police officers from the Special Policing Group also help manage the space.
In 2007, a Bed and Breakfast project began attracting foreign tourists to Morro do Cantagalo. The project was conceived by Daniel Plá and Mirian Gleitzmann. Twenty homes initially participated.
In 1985, the Plano Inclinado do Pavão-Pavãozinho was introduced. It provides access to the community via a funicular. In 2009, Morro do Cantagalo received its own Pacifying Police Unit or UPP.
The Complexo Rubem Braga opened in 2010. It features two towers and a viewpoint called Mirante da Paz. The residents chose this name themselves. A free elevator connects the favela to the General Osório metro station.
The virtual game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 drew inspiration from Pavão-Pavãozinho. The Brazilian singer Fernanda Brum has a song called “Pavão-Pavãozinho”.
The Museu de Favela, or MUF, was founded in 2008. Its mission is to transform Morro do Pavão, Pavãozinho and Cantagalo. It wants to make it a tourist monument. It celebrates the formation of favelas. It also honors the cultural origins of samba, the culture of migrants, the black culture, visual arts, and dance. The MUF offers guided tours of its open-air gallery. This is a tourist circuit of painted houses. These Casas-Telas tell stories and portray memories of the community. The MUF also organizes activities to unite residents and visitors. These include film screenings at CineMUF, a traveling library, and English courses.
Morro do Cantagalo has a rich history and vibrant culture. It is a testament to the resilience and creativity of its residents. It is a community striving for a better future.
