Did you ever hear of a school with its own rock wall? Springfield Secondary School in Singapore has just that. Springfield Secondary School was established in December 1992. It was originally called Tampines West Secondary School. The school moved to its current location at Tampines Avenue 8 in June 1993. Springfield Secondary School officially opened in September 1995. The opening included the unveiling of their unique rock wall. This rock wall quickly became a symbol of the school and its adventurous spirit. It also became the centerpiece for Springfield’s flagship rock climbing program. In 1998, Springfield Secondary School launched Operation Beacon 1. This community service project brought members of the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped on a climb up Mount Kinabalu. It was a powerful demonstration of the school’s commitment to developing a caring spirit. The project also marked the beginning of a strong tradition of community engagement. In 2008, Springfield’s focus on rock climbing was recognized. The school was awarded niche status for its rock climbing program. This program aimed to develop students’ adventurous and rugged spirits. Springfield Secondary School continued to strengthen its community ties. It collaborated with the Tampines West Community Club to organize GIFT II (Games Involving Fitness and Teamwork). The school also partnered with Evergreen Circle and the Tampines Grove Garden. This expanded their service to the wider Tampines community. Springfield Secondary School embraced applied learning. In 2014, the school was granted the Applied Learning Programme in ‘Health Sciences’. This program focuses on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. It gives students practical experience and opportunities to use their skills in different subjects. The school’s Learning for Life Programme (LLP) in Community and Youth Leadership (CYL) was also established in 2014. This program is built around the school’s values: Graciousness, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, and Diligence. It emphasizes social responsibility and volunteerism using a tiered approach called G.E.A.R (Grounded in Values; Engaged to Learn and Lead; Aspire to Serve; Ready to Soar). In 2017, Springfield Secondary School celebrated its 25th anniversary with the theme “A New Page, A New Chapter”. The school unveiled a newly renovated library and the Environment Pledge Banner. This banner, part of Project Green Pledge, represented the school’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact. The banner was created with thumbprints from the school, partner organizations, and the community. Impressively, this resulted in Springfield Secondary School being listed in the Singapore Book of Records for the largest logo made of thumbprints. Five years later, Springfield Secondary School celebrated its 30th anniversary with the theme ‘Reminisce the Past, Celebrate the Present, Explore the Future’. The year-long celebration featured lessons about the school’s history and accomplishments. A key part of the celebration was the launch of The Usual Place (TUP), a dedicated space for after-school activities. A special anniversary song, composed by music teacher Ms Lim Jia Jing, added a personal touch to the celebration. Springfield Secondary School continues its mission of holistic student development. It aims to prepare students for a successful future beyond their secondary education.
