Ready to step back in time at West Seattle High School? It’s a place where history echoes in the halls. It is a place where the spirit of the Wildcats roars through generations.
West Seattle High School opened its doors in 1902. Back then it was simply known as West Seattle School. But as the community grew, so did the school’s identity. In 1917, the current building was unveiled. With it came a new name West Seattle High School.
Initially, the school’s mascot was an Indian Chief. The teams were known as the Indians. However, times changed. After much consideration, the mascot was updated. In 2002, the school embraced a new symbol the Wildcat.
The building itself is a sight to behold. Designed in the neo-Renaissance style by Edgar Blair, it stands on 8.6 acres. Over the years, additions and renovations have shaped its form. Floyd Naramore, Naramore Bains Brady Johansen, and Theo Damn have all left their mark. The Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board recognized its significance in 1981.
A major remodel in 2000-2002 transformed the school. Bassetti Architects doubled the facility’s size. They created a new entrance. They added a gymnasium, theater, and Commons spaces. The main entrance was restored. The central auditorium became the Commons. The old gym was converted into the library.
West Seattle High School is a member of the 3A Metro League. Its athletic teams have achieved considerable success. The 2006 Senior Varsity Baseball Team were Metro League Champions. In 2022, the Varsity Baseball team was again crowned Metro League Champion. The 2004 and 2005 Varsity volleyball team also claimed Metro League Championships. The 2004 Wrestling Team were also Metro League Champions. The 2007-08 Men’s basketball team made it to the State championship playoffs for the first time in 38 years. The football team were the champions of the 2008-09 metro sound season.
Many notable individuals have walked these halls. Ed Bahr played for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Byron “By” Bailey starred in the NFL and Canadian Football League. Fred Beckey was a renowned mountaineer. Dyan Cannon and Frances Farmer graced the silver screen. Dow Constantine serves as King County Executive. Gregory C. Johnson soared into space as a NASA astronaut. Jim Whittaker was the first American to climb Mount Everest.
Today, West Seattle High School continues to educate and inspire. Brian Vance serves as the principal. The school is part of the Seattle Public Schools district. It serves students in grades nine through twelve. The school has over one thousand students. Its colors are gold and navy blue.
West Seattle High School is more than just a building. It is a landmark. It is a place of learning and growth. It is a source of pride for the West Seattle community.
