As you stand before the colossal Barton Creek Square Mall, a place of endless possibilities, you might not know that this mall, a cornerstone of southwest Austin, had an unconventional start. It was back in 1977 when developers announced their grand vision for a mall, promising over a million square feet of retail space. Plans were set in motion, and the site was cleared, ready to welcome a retail haven. The biggest problem, however, arose when the extension of Loop 1, known as MoPac Expressway, was delayed. It was meant to intersect with Loop 360, right next to the mall site, but the project was halted for quite some time. While waiting for the road construction, the team focused on designs for Barton Creek Square. The project was eventually completed in 1981, but not without some complications, as nature had its own plans. The nearby Barton Creek had worsening water quality, and the City of Austin’s Environmental Board conducted daily surveillance of the site to ensure the mall’s construction didn’t further damage the creek. In the end, the builders overcame the challenges and Barton Creek Square Mall finally opened its doors in 1981. It quickly became a hub for shoppers, especially with its anchor stores like Sears, JCPenney, Foley’s, Montgomery Ward, Joskes, and Scarbrough’s. The mall has seen its fair share of expansions and renovations over the years, remaining a popular shopping destination in Austin. These included adding Nordstrom, replacing Montgomery Ward, designing a new food court, and creating a co-working space near Nordstrom. It is still fascinating to think that this mall, which you now see as a modern retail destination, started with its journey facing environmental concerns and delays. It stands as a testament to the developers’ dedication and their commitment to creating a place that would become an integral part of Austin’s cultural landscape.
