“Did the architect really flee to Rome to escape the criticism?” someone whispered as we stood before the impressive Notre-Dame de l’Assomption.

Notre-Dame de l’Assomption stands as a grand dame of Parisian architecture. This church, a stone’s throw from the Louvre, whispers tales of ambition, revolution, and artistic grandeur.

Charles Errard, the architect, envisioned a masterpiece inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. He designed a grand rotunda, a daring departure from the traditional Latin Cross design. However, when Errard left for Rome, his contractor deviated from the plans. This sparked a bitter feud. Errard blamed the contractor for the criticism the building received while the contractor pointed fingers at the unconventional design. Despite the controversy, Notre-Dame de l’Assomption was consecrated in 1676. It became a haven for well-born women seeking refuge in religious life.

The French Revolution saw the convent’s demise, and the church was almost lost. It became a storage space for theater sets, stripped of its beauty. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. In 1802, Notre-Dame de l’Assomption was restored to the Catholic Church and later became the parish church for the 1st arrondissement.

Then, in 1844, something remarkable happened. Notre-Dame de l’Assomption was entrusted to the Polish community in Paris. It became a symbol of hope and resilience for Polish refugees who had fled their homeland after the Warsaw Uprising. The Polish spirit is still palpable in the air. Notice the bust of Pope John Paul II gracing the porch, a reminder of the church’s Polish soul.

Today, Notre-Dame de l’Assomption stands as a testament to the enduring bond between France and Poland. It’s a place where history, art, and faith intertwine.
