In 1973, a remarkable journey took place, bringing a silent giant from the rainforests of West Africa to the heart of Munich. Right here before you stands the Makoré-Stamm, a testament to the power and longevity of nature. This isn’t just any tree trunk. This is the base of a Makoré tree, a species native to the Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Cameroon. Imagine a tree soaring over 50 meters high with a trunk spanning 4 meters in diameter. The Makoré-Stamm, reaching 11 meters in height, represents just a fraction of its former glory. It is estimated to be between 700 to 800 years old, silently witnessing centuries of history before finding its home here. The Makoré-Stamm was a star attraction at a forestry exhibition, a gift from the Ivory Coast. In 1980, it was entrusted to the Holzforschung München to preserve it as a natural monument. For many years, this very Makoré-Stamm held the record for the largest and heaviest of its kind ever brought to Europe from Africa.
