GKPI Jemaat Khusus Satria Grogol

“A church born from a desire for a ‘Good Shepherd’,” I pondered, standing before the GKPI Jemaat Khusus Satria Grogol. This Jakarta church, established on August 30, 1964, emerged from a reformation within the HKBP church. The GKPI Jemaat Khusus Satria Grogol sought to address concerns of administrative and leadership issues within its predecessor. The initial gathering, held at Dr. Luhut Lumbantobing’s home on Simarito Street, marked the beginning of this new congregation. The very first service of the GKPI Jemaat Khusus Satria Grogol took place a week prior, on August 23, 1964, borrowed space at the Salvation Army Church on Merdeka Street. However, subsequent services were held at Dr. Lumbantobing’s home, leading to the official establishment date of August 30. The GKPI Jemaat Khusus Satria Grogol’s formal inauguration, however, happened later, on November 1, 1964, with Dr. Andar Lumbantobing officiating. Thousands attended, celebrating this fresh start. The driving force behind the formation of GKPI Jemaat Khusus Satria Grogol wasn’t theological differences. Instead, it was a longing for a leadership style more aligned with Christ’s example as the “Good Shepherd.” This theme resonated deeply, even featuring in the GKPI’s first General Synod in 1966. The church founders emphasized a leadership model centered on service, echoing Mark 10:45, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.” This was a direct response to the perceived hierarchical and power-focused leadership of the previous church. Another core value of the GKPI Jemaat Khusus Satria Grogol, from its very inception, was the concept of the “Priesthood of all Believers” (1 Peter 2:9). This principle, enshrined in the church’s 1966 constitution, underscores the belief that every believer is called to participate in ministry, not just ordained clergy. This belief fostered a sense of shared responsibility and empowered members to actively contribute their talents. From the beginning, the GKPI Jemaat Khusus Satria Grogol placed significant emphasis on evangelism and acts of service. This commitment manifested in the establishment of orphanages like “Mamre” and “Yapentra,” the Agape Fund Foundation, and the Lantera Elderly Home. These initiatives reflect the church’s dedication to not just spreading the Gospel but also enacting its message through tangible acts of compassion and support for the community.
