Sculpted against the Buenos Aires sky, the Juana Azurduy Monument commands attention. It’s not just a statue; it’s a story etched in bronze. The Juana Azurduy Monument stands in Plaza del Correo, a testament to a woman warrior, a mother, and a symbol of indigenous resilience. This imposing figure, all 52 feet and 25 tons of her, is the largest bronze sculpture in Argentina. She holds a sword, a symbol of her fight for liberation in the Bolivian War of Independence. On her back, she carries a child wrapped in an aguayo, a traditional Andean textile. This depicts Juana Azurduy not just as a warrior, but also as a mother, protecting her child and her people.

The Juana Azurduy Monument’s journey to this plaza is a story in itself. Originally unveiled in 2015, it replaced a statue of Christopher Columbus in Plaza Colón, a decision meant to honor indigenous contributions to Argentina’s history. This move sparked controversy, highlighting the complex relationship between historical figures and national identity. The relocation to Plaza del Correo in 2017, partly due to weather damage, added another layer to the monument’s narrative. The statue’s creator, Argentine sculptor and indigenous rights activist Andrés Zerneri, captured Juana Azurduy’s strength and determination. He depicted her in the attire of her people, her poncho echoing the designs of indigenous American textiles.

Juana Azurduy’s story is one of courage and sacrifice. She fought alongside her husband in the Bolivian War of Independence until his capture and execution. Even after this devastating loss, she continued to fight, eventually achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Despite her contributions, recognition came late, a century after her death. Her remains now rest in a mausoleum in Sucre, Bolivia, her birthday, July 12th, marked as the Day of Argentine-Bolivian Fellowship. Standing before the Juana Azurduy Monument today, you’re not just observing a statue. You’re connecting with a complex history, a story of struggle, resilience, and finally, recognition. It’s a powerful reminder of the unsung heroes who shaped South American history, their stories etched in bronze for generations to come.
