Walter Charles Smith. This name might not mean much to you now, but he played a small part in the story of Lewisham Seventh Day Adventist Church. You see, this very building was once owned by him. It was part of a pair of semi-detached houses known as ‘The Accacias’. But let’s rewind a little. Before it became ‘The Accacias’, this structure was known as ‘Heathville’. Constructed in 1898, it served as the stable block for a grander building called ‘The Priory’. Now, ‘The Priory’ held a special place in literary history as the home of renowned author John Thackeray, who established the Thackeray almshouses in 1840. Fast forward to 1912, and ‘Heathville’ transformed into the local YMCA, a hub for the community. However, its time as a YMCA was short-lived. In 1934, the building closed its doors and was sold. And who became the new owner? The Seventh-day Adventists. Lewisham Seventh Day Adventist Church, as we know it, came into being. Our first pastor, Clifford Anderson, led the congregation, and in that very year, the church witnessed its first baptism.
