Its story began not with soaring spires but with a community’s yearning. In the late 1960s Lomas de Zamora dreamed of its own university. This dream materialized on October 13 1972. Law 19888 brought the National University of Lomas de Zamora to life.
The university’s creation responded to a need. National universities in Buenos Aires and La Plata struggled under a growing student population. Lomas de Zamora’s population boomed from 1960 to 1970. The university offered a solution. It aimed to ease the burden on established institutions. It also provided educational opportunities to a rapidly expanding community.
Initially the university held classes at night. The Escuela Normal de Banfield provided space. For over a decade the School of Social Sciences shared this location. Finally in 1986 a new building opened. It sits on the university’s current campus.

They represented a departure from traditional academic offerings. Today the university’s academic offerings have expanded. It houses five departments: Agronomy Economics Engineering Law and Social Sciences. The Social Sciences department’s Media department publishes InfoRegión. This online periodical covers Greater Buenos Aires. The university boasts over 30000 students. It is a significant educational hub in the region.
